The article, featured on the INDICARE site, speculates that Rights Expression Languages (REL) used in digital rights management (DRM) systems to express how content can be used are currently uni-directional; content providers declare their rules for DRM systems, which consumers have to agree and adhere to if they want to access the content. The article examines the consequences of a shift towards bi-directional communication, whereby consumers could be "empowered to actively shape the content commerce relationships they engage in."
